Smart Metering Design Group
Informing government decisions
SMDG has now been superseded by the Overall Design Advisory Group (ODAG) but information on the SMDG meetings such as agendas and minutes can be found below.
The Smart Metering Design Group (SMDG) was established as part of a broader engagement strategy to draw upon the experience and expertise of industry participants and other stakeholders.
The purpose of establishing the SMDG is to inform government decisions by:
- providing advice to the Smart Metering Implementation Programme team on smart metering design issues raised in the Smart Metering Implementation Programme Prospectus and the Government Response to Consultation
- providing advice to the programme team on the achievability and implications of relevant consultation proposals set out in the Prospectus
- actively identifying risks to the Smart Metering Implementation Programme and proposing mitigation measures
Industry's draft technical specifications
In March 2011, DECC and Ofgem published the Response to the Prospectus Consultation, which set out the planned approach to the design of the new obligations on energy suppliers to install smart metering equipment. It was announced government would commission and facilitate the work of industry experts (the Smart Metering Design Group – SMDG) to develop draft technical specifications. The industry’s draft technical specifications is the main output of this process.
The Government’s introductory document:
- provides an overview of the documents the SMDG has produced
- explains how the Smart Metering Implementation Programme facilitated the SMDG’s work
- describes how the Government plans to review and develop the specifications to ensure they meet the programme’s needs
