DECC works in close partnership with the devolved administrations (DAs) of Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in tackling climate change and promoting sustainable energy.
The DAs are included in the UK’s targets to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and have additional targets of their own:
- the Scottish Government has targets to reduce GHG emissions by 42% by 2020 and 90% by 2050 (from 1990 baseline)
- the Welsh Assembly Government (WAG) has a target for a 3% annual reduction in GHGs in respect of policy areas that have been devolved to them
- the Northern Ireland Executive (NIE) has a target of a 25% reduction to reduce GHGs by 2025 (from 1990 baseline)
The DAs are also committed to expanding the UK’s capacity for generating low-carbon and renewable energy:
- the SG has a target of generating 31% of Scotland's electricity from renewable energy by 2011 and 50% by 2020;
- the WAG aims for Wales to be more than self-sufficient in renewable energy by 2025;
- and the NIE has a target for 12% of electricity to be generated from renewable sources by 2012 and 40% by 2020.
