Over the last few years, DECC has developed energy consumption data to regional and local authority levels. This data reinforces the importance of local and regional decision-making in helping us achieve our national energy policy objectives – as identified in the Energy white paper 2003: our energy future - creating a low carbon economy.
DECC is committed to creating and making this energy data available in order to help local authorities and regional bodies to target their energy efficiency-related activities effectively.
In March 2008, the five local authority energy consumption datasets (which cover electricity, gas, road transport fuels, residual fuels and total energy consumption) gained National Statistics status. The middle layer super output area (MLSOA) gas and electricity dataset also gained this status. This applies to all datasets from 2005 onwards.
Helping you interpret the data
We have written guidance notes to help you understand the data and how best to use it:
In addition, we have produced maps, which show average electricity, gas and total energy consumption for local authorities in Great Britain.
Available datasets
To access all available datasets, follow the links below:
Please note that residual fuel consumption and total final energy consumption on sub–national level for 2008 are scheduled for publication on 23rd December 2010.
A timetable of DECC's statistical releases for twelve months ahead is available below:
Combined local authority datasets
Alternatively, instead of accessing each dataset individually, you can view all local authority datasets from 2002 onwards in one place – using the combined regional files shown below. This means you can view the data quickly and easily without downloading separate files.
There are also middle layer super output area (MLSOA) combined documents for 2005, 2006 and 2007. You can look for individual local authorities or compare data from several areas at once.
Please note: this workbook requires you to download the file onto your hard drive and ‘enable macros’ before it will work correctly.
