Wave and tidal energy

About Wave and Tidal

  • Wave and tidal stream energy is electricity generated from the movement of wave and tidal flows.
  • Wave power is much more predictable than wind power – and it increases during the winter, when electricity demand is at its highest.
  • As with wave power, tidal and current stream energies are predictable and consistent. It is estimated that the UK has around 50 percent of Europe’s tidal energy resource, and a study in 2004 estimated our technical resource at around 16 TWh/year (4 percent of supply).
  • Hydroelectric power is the energy derived from flowing water and is covered in a separate section of the website.
