Government response to Dr Mike Weightman's final report on 'Lessons Learnt' from Fukushima for UK Nuclear Industry

Following the publication of Dr Mike Weightman’s final report on 11 October, the Government responded to a number of recommendations for further action on 1 December.

The Minister of State for Energy, Charles Hendry made a Written Ministerial Statement to Parliament announcing the Government’s response to recommendations made in the final report.

Following the accident at the Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan, the Secreatry of State for Energy and Climate Change, Chris Huhne, asked UK Chief Nuclear Inspector Dr Mike Weightman to provide a report to the Government on the implications of the unprecedented events in Japan and the lessons to be learned for the UK nuclear industry.

Following publication of his interim report on 18 May 2011, Dr Weightman published his final report on 11 October 2011, which is available to view on the Office for Nuclear Regulation website. Chris Huhne also presented a Written Ministerial Statement to Parliament announcing the publication of the report.


Government response to Dr Mike Weightman’s interim report on ‘lessons learnt’ from Fukushima for UK nuclear industry

Following the publication of Dr Mike Weightman’s interim report on 18 May, the Government was asked to respond to the three recommendations specific to government action in ensuring an ongoing commitment to the principle of continuous improvement in nuclear safety.

The Government responded to Dr Weightman’s recommendations on 21 June. The Secretary of State for Energy and Climate Change, Chris Huhne made a Written Ministerial Statement to Parliament announcing the Government’s response to recommendations made in the interim report.

Dr Weightman’s final report is expected to be published in the Autumn.

Dr Weightman’s final report is expected to be published by the middle of September.
