Civil Nuclear Police Authority (CNPA)
In 2002, a five-yearly review of the UKAEA Constabulary recommended transferring the Constabulary from the UKAEA to a statutory Police Authority. The review concluded there would be significant benefits for a Constabulary operating on a ‘stand-alone’ basis.
The Energy Act 2004 created the Civil Nuclear Police Authority (CNPA) and set out powers to members of the Civil Nuclear Constabulary.
The Authority contains independent members, as well as representatives of the main nuclear operators. Representatives from DECC, Office for Civil Nuclear Security (OCNS) and the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority (NDA) observe the Authority’s proceedings.
In August 2009 Mr George Beveridge, Deputy Managing Director of Sellafield Ltd, was appointed as a new member of the CNPA.
