Nuclear safety and security
The Department of Energy and Climate Change is the lead government department responsible for nuclear issues, including the policy on safety and security of the UK’s civil nuclear site and civil nuclear emergency planning in England and Wales.
In particular, our work in this area includes:
- Nuclear safety: dealing with UK nuclear safety issues, both nationally and internationally
- Nuclear security: ensuring the overall effectiveness of the UK civil nuclear security regime
- Emergency planning and response: coordinating the national response to an emergency at a civil nuclear site in England and Wales
- European and international standards: representing the UK at international fora that set the standards for safety and security.
All work in these areas takes place in close collaboration with other government departments, agencies, the nuclear industry’s regulatory bodies, and where appropriate, stakeholders.
