International energy

An important part of UK

Light bulb containing world map

As the UK’s oil and gas reserves and production are in decline, we need to import a greater proportion from a variety of countries as we move to a low-carbon economy.

Against this backdrop, international issues form an important part of energy matters in the UK.

Supply side

Working internationally, we are:

  • encouraging investment in oil and gas production – working with key producer countries through international organisations (e.g. Energy Charter Treaty) and international energy companies
  • promoting the more reliable supply of energy – by:
    – deepening bilateral relationships and associated business links
    – improving the operation of markets internationally and within the EU, notably through the Third Package of Energy market liberalisation and stimulation of the necessary infrastructure investment
    – encouraging new routes to market through new pipelines and grid interconnection
    – ensuring robust emergency response arrangements
  • enhancing price stability, particularly for oil – by:
    – increasing transparency
    – sharing analysis of energy and financial markets
    – enhancing producer-consumer dialogue
working with the G20, IEA, OPEC and International Energy Forum

Demand side

We are:

  • reducing demand by promoting low-carbon growth internationally – encouraging energy efficiency policies (including reductions in gas flaring) and adoption of low-carbon technologies (e.g. sustainable biofuels)

To deliver these policies we work with the EU, other countries, institutions, business and across government. In doing so, we aim to maximise UK business opportunities to ensure energy security and economic prosperity go hand-in-hand with achieving our climate change objectives.
