Non-proliferation

This section of the site explains how DECC is actively promoting non-proliferation of nuclear, chemical and biological weapons, on behalf of the UK, both nationally and internationally.

DECC is committed to tackling the international global threat created by the international nuclear, chemical and biological legacies that also pose an important environmental challenge.

Our work in this area includes:

  • Placing the relevant international regimes and conventions in place in the UK and ensuring they are adhered to. To do this, DECC works closely with organisations such as the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).
  • Representing the UK in the Urenco Joint Committee, set up under the Treaty of Almelo (1970), which encourages close co-operation between the Urenco enrichment enterprises in Germany, the Netherlands and the UK. Today, along with the US, they form the Urenco Group.
  • Helping tackle nuclear non-proliferation, security, safety, and associated legacy challenges in Russia, other states of the Former Soviet Union (FSU) and elsewhere.

All of our non-proliferation work takes place in partnership with other organisations and government departments.

We have divided this part of our site into three distinct sections:

  • nuclear
  • chemical and biological
  • global threat reduction
