Support for decommissioning in the Former Soviet Union and Central Eastern Europe
Over the period 2000-2004, the UK contributed almost £8m to internationally-managed funds for the decommissioning of nuclear reactors in Lithuania, Bulgaria, Ukraine and the Slovak Republic, and pre-decommissioning facilities at Chernobyl. These contributions were part of an international effort to ensure that early Soviet-designed reactors that did not meet international safety standards were closed as soon as possible.
Bulgaria’s four reactors at Kozloduy, and the Slovak Republic’s two reactors at Bohunice, were closed by the end of 2006. Lithuania’s two reactors at Ignalina were closed by the end of 2009. Further information on the decommissioning programme is available from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD).
The UK continues to support international remediation efforts at Chernobyl through contributions to two funds managed by the EBRD: the Nuclear Safety Account and the Chernobyl Shelter Fund.
