Defra is responsible for policy on crops including the non-food crops used to produce renewable fuels and materials. Defra’s agenda on the Green economy is also linked with DECC’s work on bioenergy and the low carbon economy. Defra’s Science and Research Projects database includes information on renewables.
The Department for Business, Innovation & Skills (BIS)
The Department for Business, Innovation & Skills is responsible for policy on a number of issues linked to renewable fuels and materials, including bioscience technologies and the development of the UK’s chemicals, construction and automotive sectors.
Biotechnology & Biological Science Research Council (BBSRC)
Provides an online database containing information on all research funded by the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC), at BBSRC sponsored Institutes.
The National Non-food Crops Centre
The National Non-Food Crops Centre (NNFCC) is the UK's centre for bio- renewable energy, fuels and materials. It gives independent advice and information to industry, Government Departments and the general public. Established in 2003 and sponsored by DECC, the NNFCC helps facilitate the building of strong, sustainable supply chains in the bio-based economy.
The NNFFC also produces regular newsletters and reports on a range of renewable materials and fuels sectors.
The Biomass Energy Centre
The Biomass Energy Centre (BEC) is a 'one stop shop' for anyone in the UK with an interest in biomass derived solid, liquid and gaseous fuels and associated conversion technologies. Set up in April 2006, it is owned and managed by the UK Forestry Commission, via Forest Research, its research agency.
