Consultation on the term Carbon Neutral

Consultation on the term ‘carbon neutral’: its definition and recommendations for good practice

The purpose of the consultation was to seek views on a draft definition for the term carbon neutral that could be used by individuals and organisations and in relation to the products (goods and services) they provide. The consultation also provided practical guidance on applying the definition and set out recommendations on what constitutes good practice.

The consultation also considered whether there was a role for Government, in particular, in defining carbon neutral and other carbon-related terms. The Government has established its own carbon neutrality targets relating to the central Government estate and Government use of ICT. Government intends to apply the definition and guidelines agreed through this consultation to its own targets.

The consultation closed on 21 May 2009 - thank you for the responses. DECC published the summary of responses on 1 October 2009.

DECC also published “Guidance on carbon neutrality” on 30 September 2009. This document provides anyone who wants to achieve carbon neutrality with the information and guidance they need to help them do so effectively.
